XCEL ENERGY WARNS OF YET ANOTHER SCAM

EASTERN NEW MEXICO (KSMX ) – Xcel Energy is warning customers of yet another scam trying to separate you from your heard earned dollars. In recent scam attempts reported in the region, scammers are impersonating Xcel Energy agents, telling customer that a serviceman is on his way to disconnect their electrical service for nonpayment. The scammers are demanding payment over the phone in order to prevent disconnection, offering only one option for making payment, a prepaid debit card. Xcel officials note that if customers are behind on payments, they will receive a disconnect notice in the mail, before any other attempt to collect is made. If customers receive calls demanding payment under threat of imminent loss of service, they should hang up and contact Xcel Energy to verify account status. Account balances can also be checked via Xcel’s mobile app.
