WINTER STORM WATCH ISSUED FOR EASTERN NM

EASTERN NM (KSMX) – With the impending storm headed our direction, The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch effective from Friday into Saturday morning. Heavy mixed precipitation is possible, with total snow accumulations greater than 4 inches. Ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch can also be expected throughout south-central Mountains and Chaves County plains, as well as Quay, Curry, Roosevelt, De Baca, Eastern Lincoln, and Southwest Chaves Counties. The storm is expected to begin Friday morning and last through Saturday morning. Plan on slippery road conditions. A winter storm watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet, or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Xcel Energy also released information regarding the storm, noting that with the presence of ice, power outages may likely occur. The company is reminding customers to be prepared if outages persist for several hours or overnight by having a supply of batteries, food, water and warm blankets. Also remember to use extreme caution with candles or open-flame heating devices. In the event of downed power lines, customers should assume they are energized, stay away from the area, and report it to Xcel Energy immediately.
