US DEPT OF ENERGY TO INVESTIGATE WIPP
CARLSBAD (KSMX) - In regional news, the U.S. Energy Department will be looking into the
Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in the in Southern New Mexico, after workers
were allegedly exposed to hazardous chemicals last year. The AP reports
that the federal agency's Office of Enterprise Assessments filed a notice
in January of the intent to investigate Nuclear Waste Partnership, the
contractor that runs the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. According to the
notice, employees were potentially "overexposed" to carbon tetrachloride,
nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide between July and October of last year.
Upon investigation, if circumstances are found to be true, the DOE says
fines could result.
