Trees are good for the earth and help lower energy bills

AMARILLO, Texas — Trees play an important role in caring for the Earth, and for Texas and New Mexico residents, they can also help manage energy use during the summer months. Xcel Energy is encouraging customers to make informed decisions about what to plant and where, based on cost-effectiveness and utility safety needs.
“Trees matter to customers for more than just their appearance. They provide shade, help block wind and can reduce energy use,” said Fletcher Johnson, director of vegetation management for Xcel Energy. “When trees are planted in the right place, they help minimize interference with power lines so we can keep the electric system running smoothly, while also helping reduce energy costs for customers during the hottest part of the year.”
Strategically planned landscaping is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce energy use, often paying for itself in energy savings within seven to 10 years. Shaded areas can be 20 to 40 degrees cooler than areas in direct sunlight. Planting appropriate trees around homes and businesses can help reduce the need for air conditioning, easing strain on equipment and helping lower monthly electric bills.
Customers can find guidance on optimal planting locations and recommended tree varieties on Xcel Energy’s Sustainable Landscaping page and this online Tree Planting Guide.
Planting tips include:
• Shade west-facing walls and windows with deciduous trees that provide cooling in the summer and allow sunlight to warm the home after leaves fall.
• Plant vines and shrubs near the home to create an insulating layer of air space along exterior walls.
• Use low shrubs and ground cover to reduce heat reflected from roads, driveways, patios, and walkways.
• Shade air-conditioning units to help them operate more efficiently, while keeping branches and leaves clear to maintain proper airflow.
For safety and service reliability, trees and shrubs should be planted 15 to 35 feet away from utility lines and never directly beneath overhead lines. Proper placement helps protect customers, prevent outages and reduce future maintenance needs.
Xcel Energy also reminds customers to call 811 before starting any landscaping project that involves digging so underground utility lines can be marked.
