STATE POLICE RELEASE INFORMATION REGARDING FATAL ACCIDENT

PORTALES (KSEL) – An update to the story we broke yesterday regarding the fatal incident on U.S. Highway 70. According to a release from New Mexico State police, the incident occurred near mile post 425, just north of Portales. Police responded to a bicyclist, identified as a 44-year-old Australian male, that was struck and killed just before 9:00 a.m. Initial reports show that a 2016 Ford F-150, driven by a 43-year-old female from Clovis, drifted from the roadway, striking the bicyclist from behind. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford was uninjured. Officials say driver inattention does appear to be a contributing factor, however, they do not believe alcohol was involved in the cause of the crash. Charges have not been filed at this time, as the incident is still under investigation.
