LEA COUNTY (KSMX) – In regional news, Lea County in Southeast New Mexico is now the third leading oil producer in the entire country. Data from the website shalexp.com shows that Lea County pumped out just over 12-million barrels of oil per month, on average. That trailed Weld County, Colorado, by about a half million barrels per month. Meanwhile, McKenzie County in North Dakota pumped out a whopping 14.8 million barrels of oil per month in 2018, according to the website. However, Lea County Assistant County Manager Corey Needham says Lea County is very much on track to overtake Weld County by the end of this year, becoming the second largest producer of oil in the US.
