SHOTS FIRED IN DOWNTOWN PORTALES LEADS TO FURTHER INVESTIGATION
On Wednesday, February 24, 2021, at approximately 7:37 p.m. the Portales Police Department was contacted regarding subjects shooting at him. Detectives were contacted and followed up on the incident. The investigation led detectives to an address in Alta Tera where, at approximately 11:25 p.m., they attempted to make contact with the suspects after observing occupants moving about the residence. The detectives knocked and identified themselves to the occupants. The occupants made verbal threats of force to the officers which caused the detectives to back away from the residence while they awaited other officers to arrive.
While awaiting assistance shots were fired from inside the residence and a male subject then exited the residence and began to fire multiple shots at the detective with a long gun. The detective returned fire and the subject went back into the residence. The detective then found a position of better cover and continued to take gun fire. The subjects later called police dispatch and exited the residence where they were taken into custody without further incident. A search warrant was conducted at the residence and two long guns were recovered. No one was hit with gun fire during the exchange and the investigation is still ongoing. Arrested at the time were a 17 year old male, a 21 year old Jordan Lee Venegas and 19 year old Manuel Venegas.
