REPORTED FATALITY AT NEARBY DUMP STATION IN MELROSE

On Sunday, May 23, 2021, at approximately 1:00 PM, Curry County Sheriff’s deputies responded to an accident involving a small child at the dump station, 5th and Avenue B, in Melrose, New Mexico. The investigation has determined that Tyler Turner, age 31 of Melrose, was at the dump station in a 2019 Ford pickup and towing a trailer. Two 11-year-old boys were riding on the trailer, preparing to dump trash and debris.

Camden Stevens, attempted to jump from the trailer but lost his footing and fell. The trailer tires struck Camden, causing critical life-threatening injuries. Camden was transported by ambulance to Plains Regional Medical Center and then flown to a medical facility in Lubbock, Texas. At approximately 1:30 AM on Monday, May 24, 2021, the medical staff reported that Camden had succumbed to the injuries.

The investigation is continuing. Our thoughts and prayers are with this family.
