PORTALES WOMEN CHARGED WITH HOMICIDE AND DUI FROM TUESDAY NIGHT CRASH

In a Wednesday press release from the Portales Police Department, the following has been reported about the late Tuesday night vehicle collision.

On Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at approximately 11:17 p.m. the Portales Police and Fire Departments responded to a reported motor vehicle crash at the intersection of West 18th Street and South Avenue D (New Mexico 206). Upon arrival officers observed two passenger cars had been involved in the crash and multiple occupants were transported to Roosevelt General Hospital for injuries. One driver, thirty-five-year-old Laura Fernandez of Portales, was not transported and was determined to be deceased at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle along with the passenger were transported to Roosevelt General Hospital and following the investigation was arrested upon her release from the hospital. Twenty-four-year-old Bionca Martinez of Portales was arrested and booked into the Roosevelt County Detention Center on the charges of homicide by vehicle and driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

The investigation determined that the vehicle driven by Martinez was northbound on South Avenue D at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of 18th and D. After passing the stop sign Martinez’s vehicle collided with the vehicle driven by Fernandez.

Martinez told Portales police detective, Sergeant Nikolas Sanchez, before the collision, she was northbound on SR206 heading toward Portales when she ran the stop sign at D and 18th. She told Sanchez the other car also ran the stop sign for westbound 18th.
