NM SHERIFFS ASSOCIATION OPPOSES GUN CONTROL BILLS

SANTA FE (KSMX) – In the legislative update, a heated topic currently in the Roundhouse has a number of Sheriffs statewide joining in opposition. The bills that have the New Mexico Sheriff’s Association opposing are House Bill 8 and Senate Bill 8, known as “universal background checks” as well as HB 83 that authorizes law enforcement to confiscate firearms and ammunition from individuals based on statements made to a judge outside of any formal court hearing, noting “the measures make it harder for law-abiding New Mexicans to exercise their Second Amendment rights, waste scarce law enforcement resources, and do nothing to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.” Despite the bills advancing in the roundhouse, the Association has announced their opposition to the proposed legislation.
