New Mexico Supreme Court invites community to oral argument at ENMU April 1.

Portales, NM – The New Mexico Supreme Court is scheduled to visit Portales to hold oral arguments for a criminal case on the Eastern New Mexico University campus as part of the Rule of Law program. The arguments and proceedings will also be livestreamed.

As part of the Rule of Law program, a civics education initiative designed to help the public, especially students, understand how law functions in a democratic society, the Supreme Court travels outside of Santa Fe to hear cases in communities throughout New Mexico.

On Wednesday, April 1, 2026 the Supreme Court will hear legal arguments in State v. Mendez at the ENMU theatre complex beginning at 1:00 pm. The case involves issues of alleged juror bias and is suitable for all audiences.

According to a release from the Ninth Judicial Districts Courts, attendees will have the opportunity to speak with attorneys involved in the case and, if time permits, the justices may also take questions.

Local schools are encouraged to participate by sending students, allowing students to attend on their own, or by livestreaming the oral arguments in their classrooms.
