New Mexico Open cracks Top 10 PGA section tournament purses

Press Release, Sun Country Golf House

Rio Rancho, NM – A record-breaking purse is drawing elite golfers to the Land of Enchantment for a PGA Section event.

The purse, which could exceed $100,000, for the New Mexico Open at Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort in Elephant Butte ranks among the Top 10 purses in the country for PGA Section Tournaments, a press release shows.

The New Mexico Open’s purse ranks ahead of Michigan’s PGA Section Tournament purse and is tied with the Southern California and Texas PGA Section Tournament purses, according to Executive Director of the Sun Country Golf House Cory Armstrong.

The Sun Country Golf House oversees the Sun Country PGA Section, which has served PGA of America golf professionals and enthusiasts across New Mexico and El Paso County through education and tournaments since 1974, the release shows.

The potentially $100,000-plus purse for the NM Open is the largest in the tournament’s history, according to previous Albuquerque Business First reporting. And the purse has over 20 sponsors, including Bin Store Brands, Fiji Water & Beverage and New Mexico Magazine, the most it’s had in tournament history, the release shows.

The 2025 New Mexico Open marks the beginning of a three-year partnership between the resort and the Sun Country PGA Section, making the resort the exclusive host site through 2027, the release shows.

The resort is owned by New York-based PreReal Investments, which is working to revitalize it into a master-planned community and a premier golf destination.

“We didn’t just want to host a tournament, we wanted to raise the bar across the entire PGA Section system,” CEO of PreReal Investments James Prendamano said in the release. “With a Top 10 purse and a world-class field, we’re turning Turtleback into a national golf destination.”

This year’s tournament will have 155 participants, including two-time PGA Tour winner Matt Every and NCAA individual champion Todd Dempsey, according to the release.

The tournament will be held Sept. 15 through Sept. 17, the release shows.
