NEW MEXICO IS AMONG TOP 5 STATES IN HIGHEST DRUG & ALCOHOL FATALITIES
CLOVIS (KSMX)- June is National Safety Month and SafeWise is joining thousands oforganizations nationwide in educating the public on how to reduce the leading causes of injury in our homes and communities. New Mexico is among the top 5 states with the highest fatality rates for Drug & Alcohol Poisoning in the US.
And according to the recent State ofSafety Survey, <https://www.safewise.com/state-of-safety/> only 17% of New Mexico residents rated it as a top safety concern (the national level ofconcern is 45%).
Every year, more than 160,000 Americans die as a result of an unintentional household injury, making accidents the third biggest cause of death across the country. Poisoning is the #1 cause of unintentional injury deaths, which includes drug and alcohol poisoning. There are 10 drug and alcohol related poisoning deaths per 100,000 people nationwide and ages 25-64 are at highest risk. In 2017, there were more than 70,000 overdose deaths and around 68% were tied to opioids.
