National Work Zone Awareness Week begins April 20

SANTA FE (KSMX)- New Mexico motorists are asked to slow down, eliminate distractions and watch out for roadway workers and equipment as the road construction season gets underway.

National Work Zone Awareness Week begins today, April 20 with this year’s theme as Safe Work Zones for All.

Nearly 85 percent of those killed in work zones are drivers and their passengers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. New Mexico had 793 work zone crashes in 2019 wherein all, 2,181 people were injured; four people were killed.

Transportation Secretary Mike Sandoval said, “Obey the posted speed limit. Speeding is one of the major factors in work zone crashes. Turn down your music, put your phone, food and makeup away, don’t tailgate and stay patient. Do your part to save lives, while the hard-working men and women working to improve our roads do their jobs”.
