NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ANNOUNCES CANNON RADAR TO BE DOWN

CANNON, AFB (KSMX) – Officials with the National Weather Service has announced that the weather radar located at Cannon Air Force Base will be down beginning February 6th. This is due to an important upgrade that will be made to extend the lifespan of the radar tower. The project has been worked into three phases, installation of the new signal processor, refurbishment of the transmitter, both which have been completed, and finally the refurbishment of the equipment shelters; which will cause the radar to be offline. This is the first time the entire pedestal will be refurbished since the radars were originally installed in the 1990’s. The project is expected to last three weeks, finishing February 22nd.  In the event of a storm, the radar will not be able to be turned on during this process; however other radars within proximity will be able to monitor any storms in our area.
