MULTIPLE SHOOTINGS IN PORTALES FRIDAY EVENING LEAD TO ONE FATALITY

Friday evening, around 5:00 pm, the ENMU alert system sent out a warning that there was a shooting incident at an off campus resident hall. San Juan village, just catty corner to the main campus resident halls, reported the shooting and that the shooter was still on the loose. Campus residents were to take precautions and stay on alert for further information. 

About 20 minutes after the initial alert, the campus notification system sent out another message stating as follows, “No ENMU students have been reported as injured as a result of the incident at San Juan Village.” There is not an active threat at the ENMU Portales campus or its residence halls.”  

At the time, the school requested ENMU campus residents do their best in avoiding active crime scenes, while law enforcement personnel conduct their investigation. Operations and activities were to resume as normal. 

Later Friday evening, following the last ENMU notification alert, Portales PD were dispatched to a different shooting incident. Two suspects have been arrested by ENMU police. Additional charges and arrests are expected in association with this incident.
There were two separate incidents that occurred around the same time, but in different locations. One occurred near San Juan Village (17th Street) on the campus of ENMU and the other occurred in the City of Portales (17th Lane). An individual was initially reported as being an injured juvenile was found to be 18 years of age and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

In a press release that was sent out that evening, it stated that shortly after police personnel were called to the address on 17th Lane; a gunshot victim, a young female was found on the scene and was sent to Roosevelt General Hospital where she was pronounced dead. 

Portales police department is further investigating this incident and haven’t released any names while the family is being notified.

Emergency personnel is asking for your assistance in correcting inaccurate information being distributed between the two unrelated incidents. Inquires regarding the other incident that occurred off-campus in the City of Portales should be directed to the Portales Police Department.
