MULESHOE MAN DEAD AFTER SHOOTOUT WITH POLICE

MULESHOE (KCBD) -Following a shootout and short chase from Levelland to Whiteface Wednesday with law enforcement officials, a man from Muleshoe was killed. According to authorities, around 4:16 p.m. a Department of Public Safety trooper and a DPS special agent worked to stop the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Leonardo Gallegos Jr of Muleshoe. He was being stopped for a traffic violation in Levelland. When Gallegos refused to stop his 2006 Chevrolet pickup, a chase ensued; KCBD reports. Law enforcement then used tire deflation spikes to attempt to stop Gallegos; however, the suspect continued driving. Eventually he stopped in a field northwest of Whiteface, where he began shooting at law enforcement. Officers then returned fire, striking Gallegos, injuring him. He was later pronounced deceased at the scene. It was found that Gallegos had active warrants at the time of the incident for Possession of a Controlled Substance as well as failing to register as a sex offender with the Muleshoe Police Department. The incident is still under investigation.
