Meteor shower visible above New Mexico this weekend

If the sky is clear on Aug 12-13 New Mexicans will be able to see the Perseid Meteor Shower.

The Perseid Meteor Shower will be visible on Saturday, August 12, and Sunday, August 13, between midnight and sunrise.

The particles visible during the shower come from the Swift-Tuttle Comet. When the comet particles meet with Earth’s atmosphere, they burn up, creating bright streaks in the sky that we see.

The typical rate of meteor visibility is roughly 50 to 75 sightings per hour, which equals about one or two meteor sightings per minute, weather and sky visibility permitting.
