LOCAL SCHOOLS AWARDED HEALTHIER US CHALLENGE

EASTERN NM (KSMX) – A number of schools across the state are being awarded money for their nutrition efforts. The New Mexico Department of Health, along with the Public Education Department announced that 41 public elementary schools would be awarded the funds. In total, $30,500 will be given to the schools for their efforts as part of the Healthier US Schools Challenge. As part of a voluntary certification initiative, schools are recognized for their efforts in promoting nutrition and physical activity. Department of Health Secretary Lynn Gallagher says the “awards demonstrate the deep commitment these schools have to create and maintain healthy environments.” The awards were split into two categories, silver and bronze awards. Silver award schools were given $1,000 each, with bronze schools receiving $500 each. Here locally, James Elementary School in Portales received the Silver award. In Clovis all elementary schools in the district received the Bronze award.
