LOCAL DAIRY AFFECTED BY CONTAMINATED WATER
CANNON , AFB (ENM) – An eastern New Mexico dairy has lost tens of thousands of gallons of milk daily since the U.S. Air Force announced that water in the area was contaminated with chemicals associated with past military firefighting activities. The Air Force is making bottled water available for drinking and cooking for residents who rely on nearby wells that exceed the health advisory level set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Highland Dairy is among those affected. Water at the dairy and farm were found to be 35 and 200 times the EPA limit. Military officials told The News that their hands are tied until the feds set standards for the contamination, meaning there won’t be compensation for contamination to crops, cows or other food.
