LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: ACTIVE SHOOTER DRILL HEADS TO GOV

SANTA FE (KSMX) – In the legislative update, a bill that requires active shooter drill in schools is headed to the Governors desk. SB 147 also frees up more instruction time in classrooms each school year by reducing the number of outdated fire drills. Under the bill, the current total number of 14 drills would be reduced to 8, with four of them being fire drills instead of the current ten fire drills. Of the remaining four drills, at least two of them would be an active shooter drill and an evacuation drill. The remaining two would be emergency drills. The recommendation to change the number and type of emergency drills came from meetings after the school shooting in Aztec in December of 2017.
