LAWYERS OPPOSE SECRET SETTLEMENT FOR RACINO

ALBUQUERQUE (KSMX) – During their court hearing yesterday, more questions were raised about a lack of transparency and conflicts of interest as the state works through a process to decide who will win the state’s final racino license. Attorneys for the other applicants all agreed that the study was flawed; however, told a state district judge that they had grave concerns about a proposed settlement, that would ultimately resolve the claim; the AP reports. Attorneys for the other groups in Tucumcari and Clovis told the judge it appeared that the settlement was negotiated in secret by the Lordsburg group, the state attorney general’s office and the chair of the state racing commission. They also argued that the settlement violated the open meeting laws, since the commission never voted on the settlement, which could mean more lawsuits if the judge were to sign off on the settlement.
