GRASS FIRE LOCATED ALONG HIGHWAY 70

Around 12:30 pm this Tuesday November 30, 2021, the Portales Fire Department units were working a large grass fire in the area of Hwy 70 and the Portales Municipal Airport. Mutual aid, at the time of the fire was requested from Elida, Floyd, and Dora fire departments along with additional assistance from the Roosevelt County Road department, Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office, and RCEC. Motorists were asked to exercise extreme caution if traveling through the area due to multiple units and limited visibility.
At approximately 1:00 pm City and County fire and road crews had the fire under control and were “just mopping up” hot spots. A big Thank you to all the First Responders who worked on this.
During this time of the year, the high plains experience’s a high risk for grass fires, due to the tall dry grass lands and scarce precipitation. Please follow tips on how to keep your property and vehicle maintained to help prevent rural grass fires.
