FIRE SOUTH OF CLOVIS RESULTS IN MULTIPLE FATALITIES

On February 23, 2021, shortly after 4:00 AM, Curry County Sheriff’s deputies, the Clovis Police Department and the Clovis Fire Department were dispatched to a fully-engulfed residential fire, possibly involving fatalities, at 301 South Wheaton, south of Clovis.

The investigation thus far, has found that the residence received substantial fire damage. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the New Mexico State Fire Marshal’s Office. Three bodies have been located within the structure. Positive identification of these individuals and cause of death are pending further investigation, to include autopsies by the Office of the Medical Investigator. The investigation is on-going

**UPDATE**

In the continuation of the fire investigation that began Feb 23, 2021 just South of Clovis, two of the three victims have been identified.

Victim #1 has been positively identified as Johnie Lee Brewer, age 77, who resided at 420 S. Wheaton, Clovis, NM. Victim #2 has been positively identified as Leona Drake, age 95, who resided at 420 S. Wheaton, Clovis, NM. Victim #3 is still pending positive identification. The evidence thus far indicates that the fire originated inside the bedroom occupied by victim #3. All three victims succumbed to the effects of the fire and smoke.

At this point, no criminal intent, as to the ignition of the fire, has been found. The Office of the Medical Investigator is continuing to conduct carbon monoxide and toxicology testing, and will continue with their investigation to positively identify victim #3. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing to examine and analyze evidence collected from the scene.
