FINAL MOTIONS HEARD AHEAD OF DAYCARE TRIAL

CLOVIS (KSMX) – Two people arrested for the death of a child at their Portales daycare center appeared in court on Monday. A motions hearing was held in the case against 33-year-old Sandi Taylor and her mother, 62-year-old Mary Taylor. Both were charged with first degree child abuse back in July after two young girls were left unattended in a hot vehicle for more than an hour. 22-month-old Maliyah Jones was pronounced dead at Roosevelt County General Hospital. Aubriana Loya, who is now three years-old, survived the ordeal. During the hearing, the judge ruled that the prosecutor would not be allowed to argue to jurors that the Taylors should be held to a higher standard because they were daycare providers. The judge said that the fact that the women were trained childcare workers was a relevant fact that the jury would have to consider. The trial is scheduled to begin on January 28th.
