ENMU PROFESSOR SELECTED FOR NATIONAL PROJECT COMMITTEE

PORTALES (KSEL) – Eastern New Mexico University professor Dr. Donald Elder will lead efforts to build a memorial for astronauts at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C.; the University announced on their social media page. Elder will chair the Apollo One committee and ultimately make a recommendation to congress. In January of 1967, three NASA astronauts, Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chafee were killed in a fire during a trial run in preparation for the first launch of an Apollo mission that was scheduled a month later. Once a location is selected, the four members of the committee, headed by Elder, will go before the US Army to explain their selection of the memorial.
