CLOVIS MUNICIPAL SCHOOLS TO CHANGE PROCEDURE FOR RELEASE OF STUDENT INFORMATION

CLOVIS (KSMX)- When school resumes in January, parents or guardians who do not wish their student/s information to be released will be required to submit a form to the office staff at the school their student/s attends. Forms will be available in school offices on January 9, 2020.

If a parent or guardian does not want their student/s information to be released, regardless of what they may have elected previous to January 1, 2020, a new form must be submitted. Previously submitted privacy preferences will not be recognized, effective at the start of the second semester on January 9, 2020.

Previously, parents or guardians indicated their preference for release of information online via Skyward Family Access, the district’s student database.

Release of student information can be a complex issue, as it can apply to a range of things such as allowing a student to be included in a yearbook, photographed by the media, included in a public display of student work, receiving letters of recommendation from district employees, or being acknowledged in Honor Roll publications.

There are a number of reasons a parent or guardian may not want their student/s information to be released, and it is their legal right to make that choice.

Due to the vast number of things a withdrawal of consent to release student information can impact, the district believes it is best parents or guardians have the opportunity to discuss their preferences with school staff to gain a full understanding of the potential implications. This discussion is something an electronic consent process does not currently provide.
