Clovis man identified and arrested for fatal hit and run

Media Release, Clovis Police Department:


On Saturday, December 30, 2023, at about 12:43 a.m., Clovis Police Department Dispatch received a call stating a person was lying in a field near 14th and Sycamore Streets.  Officers responded and determined the subject was a victim of a hit-and-run crash.


Officers and Emergency Medical Personnel from the Clovis Fire Department attempted life-saving measures for a male who was later identified as Matthew Gibbs (age 24). Sadly, Matthew did not survive the injuries from this crash. The Clovis Police Department Major Crash Team was activated and began an investigation.


On Tuesday, January 2, 2024, the Special Operations Unit of the Clovis Police Department began working with the Major Crash Team to gather additional evidence and information for this crash. The Special Operations Unit with help from the Major Crash Team was able to determine, that the vehicle involved was a white GM truck.


On Wednesday, January 3, 2024 members of the Special Operations Unit were able to obtain video of a vehicle leaving the area of the crash and driving to a building located at 1501 E. Mabry Dr. A search warrant was obtained for the building, and a white in color 2009 Chevrolet pickup was located inside the building with damage consistent with the crash.  The vehicle has been secured and will be processed for additional evidence and information from this crash.


The driver of the vehicle was identified as Collin Guthals (age 29). Collin was located and spoke with investigators at the Clovis Police Department where he admitted to being involved in a crash. A warrant was obtained for the arrest of Collin Guthals with the charges of, accidents involving death or personal injuries (4th degree felony), tampering with evidence (4th degree felony), and driving while license suspended (misdemeanor).
