Clovis homicide update

Clovis, NM – On June 29, 2026, at approximately 11:06 p.m., Clovis Police Department Dispatch received an emergency telephone call regarding a vehicle that had crashed into a home at 14th and Hull Streets. Clovis Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the scene. On arrival, Officers located a white in color SUV and a 28-year-old male, identified as Abel Abeyta, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Abeyta was transported to Plains Regional Medical Center and was forwarded to a Lubbock, Texas hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.
Following a thorough investigation by the Clovis Police Department, all evidence related to the shooting death of Abel Abeyta was submitted to the Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s Office for review and charging consideration.
On July 15, 2026, the Clovis Police Department was notified by the Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s Office that no criminal charges related to the shooting will be filed against the shooter. After reviewing the evidence, the District Attorney’s Office determined that it could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the shooting was a criminal act. The available evidence, including surveillance video, did not allow the State to overcome a claim of self-defense. As a result, the case does not meet the legal standard for criminal prosecution.
