ALBUQUERQUE (KSMX)- The internationally known Balloon Fiesta is five months away and agencies in Bernalillo County are already preparing for it. KOAT reports that leaders with Bernalillo County returned to New Mexico, from a big event where they learn new practices to keep Balloon Fiesta participants safe.
County leaders were invited to the Indianapolis 500 where they were able to follow members of the Indianapolis Police Department who were monitoring and securing the event. Having the experience from those who have conducted such an event can help with the experience that the City of Albuquerque will see during this time. The Balloon Fiesta gathered an estimate of 886,037 total guest last year even though four events were canceled. Attendance for the annual event is still down from 2015, when more than 950,000 guest visits were recorded. With the amount of people attending each year safety is of the utmost importance. Because of this training, Bernalillo County Fire Department leaders are hoping other agencies that come to Albuquerque can also take away some safety tips during Balloon Fiesta.
