29 Paseo Village House Explosion and Assault on an Officer
Media Release from the CLOVIS PD:
Clovis, NM – July 11, 2023 – On Monday, July 10, 2023, at about 9:56 p.m., Police and Fire Services were dispatched to 29 Paseo Village for a report of an explosion at this residence. The caller described a loud “bang,” followed by smoke, and that the garage door to the residence was blown out.
Clovis Police and Fire Department personnel responded to the area, and on arrival, noted the residence had sustained substantial damage. Windows to the residence had been broken out by the explosion, and the roof of the structure had collapsed into the living room.
The resident of 29 Paseo Village, ran from the residence, passing multiple neighbors. On contact with an off-duty Police Officer who was attempting to see if he needed help, the suspect, Anthony Romo (32 years of age), pulled a pistol and attempted to shoot the Officer. The Officer responded to the deadly force, attempting to strike Romo with his marked police vehicle. Romo evaded the vehicle, which had impacted a fence. The Officer pulled his vehicle out of the area and was engaged again by Romo. The Officer discharged a less lethal bean bag shotgun at Romo and became involved in a direct physical confrontation with Romo. Romo was eventually subdued and was taken to Plains Regional Medical Center.
Romo was transferred to a Lubbock, Texas, area hospital due to the blast injuries from the explosion.
An arrest warrant has been generated for Anthony Romo for multiple charges, including Assault with Intent to Commit a Violent Felony, Battery on a Peace Officer, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Tampering with Evidence, Trafficking Methamphetamine, and Possession with intent to Distribute Fentanyl. The arrest of Anthony Romo is pending his release from the hospital.
The investigation into this event is still in progress. The house explosion will primarily be investigated by the Clovis Fire Department and State Fire Marshal’s Office.
