SWAT activation leads to arrest in Clovis

Media Release, Clovis Police Department:

On Friday, September 29, 2023, at about 3:30 hours, members of New Mexico Adult Probation and Parole recognized a wanted felon in the doorway of a metal building near 5th and Axtell Streets.  Officers of the Clovis Police Department were contacted and responded to the scene.

The subject, Louie Robert Maes (37 years of age) was wanted for an outstanding arrest warrant for felony crimes of aggravated battery on a household member and criminal sexual contact.   A Detective of the Clovis Police Department Special Operations Unit generated a search warrant for the metal building.

At about 4:17 p.m., Police Officers on scene reported hearing gunshots, just north of the building believed to be housing Maes.   Officers were unable to locate the exact location where the shots were being fired.  Based on this factor and the felony level crime Maes was wanted for, the Clovis Police Department SWAT Team was activated at 4:30 p.m.

By 5:10 p.m., SWAT deployed to 5th and Axtell and continued announcements for Maes to surrender himself.  At 5:27 p.m., Attorney Tye Harmon, who identified himself as Louie Maes’ current attorney, requested to assist in bringing this event to a peaceful conclusion.  On his arrival  to the scene, Harmon, who was in telephonic contact with Maes, was allowed to assist.  Attorney Harmon was sent with the Support Services Commander, slightly closer to the building.

At 5:48 p.m., Louie Maes surrendered himself without incident.  Maes was handcuffed and transported to the Curry County Adult Detention Center, where the arrest warrant for Aggravated Battery on a Household Member (3rd degree felony) and Criminal Sexual Contact (4th degree felony), were served.
