Skunk tests positive for rabies in Clovis

Media Release, Clovis Police Department

Clovis, NM – On Friday, May 1, 2026, Clovis Animal Control Officers responded to a report of a skunk exhibiting abnormal behavior in the 2300 block of E. 14th Street. The animal was safely captured and submitted for testing. The New Mexico Department of Health has confirmed that the skunk tested positive for rabies.

This is the first confirmed case of rabies within the City of Clovis in 2026, and the second confirmed case in Curry County this year.

Rabies is a deadly virus that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans. In New Mexico, rabies is most commonly found in wildlife such as skunks, bats, and foxes, though any mammal can be infected. Infected animals may display unusual behavior, including aggression, lack of fear of humans, or appearing unusually tame.

The Clovis Police Department urges residents to take the following precautions:

  • Ensure all pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations
  • Avoid contact with wild or unfamiliar animals
  • Do not approach animals that appear sick or behave abnormally
  • Report any animal bites or exposure immediately

If you encounter a sick or suspicious animal, contact Clovis Animal Control. If you are bitten or believe you have been exposed to rabies, seek medical attention immediately and contact the New Mexico Department of Health Helpline at 1-833-SWNURSE (1-833-796-8773).

The Clovis Police Department will continue to work closely with the New Mexico Department of Health to monitor the situation and ensure public safety.
