Portales airport awarded funding for PAPI lights

The City of Portales has been awarded $360,908 in federal funding to improve the local airport infrastructure, thanks to the support of the New Mexico Congressional Delegation, which secured over $21 million in state funding.

According to a news release from Portales City Manager, Scott Mitten, one of the key upgrades will be the installation of PAPI lights (Precision Approach Path Indicators). The release states that “these are a vital safety system that helps pilots land smoothly and accurately by showing whether they’re too high, too low, or right on target.”

The release goes on to explain that these infrastructure improvements are intended to create safer landings, more reliable operations, increased air traffic potential, and greater appeal for business and tourism.

“With PAPIs in place, Portales Airport becomes a more attractive destination for pilots, charter services, and aviation-related businesses—bringing economic growth and opportunity to our community.”
