NMDOT awards funding for South Avenue K improvement project

The City of Portales submitted multiple applications to the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) for 2026 Transportation Project Funds (TPF).
According to a news release from the City Manager’s office, not every project application was awarded funding, but one major improvement plan was approved by the State Transportation Commission on August 27, 2025.
The South Avenue K Improvement Project has been officially approved by the NMDOT and with it comes $3,000,000 in funding.
The release states, “this funding will support road repairs, fresh striping, new signage, ADA compliance upgrades, and improved drainage infrastructure.”
The improvement plan is considered “a huge step forward in making Portales safer, more accessible, and ready for future growth,” according to city officials.
